Dogs will not let themselves starve, if he is hungry enough, he will eat. He won’t right now because he knows you’re going to give in. Don’t give into those sad puppy eye and have a little discipline. Stick to one brand of food at put it down at regular intervals for him. If he is made to be hungry enough he will eat.

well geez, I’d rather have people food than that garbage in a can too.

Find a GOOD brand of dog food instead of crap. Offer him ONLY his dog food. Put the food down at his scheduled meal time, leave for 10-15 mins. After that, pick it up and offer NOTHING else until his next scheduled meal. He will eventually get hungry and eat. It may take a few days, but it wont hurt a healthy dog to fast for a few days if he refuses to eat.

    Some good brands
    chicken soup
    natural balance
    california natural
    merrick’s
    wellness
    solid gold
    timberwolf organics
    eagle pack
    artemis
    avoderm
    pinnacle
    fromm
    canidae
    Drs Foster and smith

Get him crunchy kibble, as dogs need to eat hard things. You can mix meat in with it a few times a week.

Set the food out in the mornings, and if he doesn’t eat it after 20 minutes, pick it up and wait until evening, set it out again, and do the same in the evenings. DO NOT GIVE HIM ANYTHING ELSE BUT WATER. After a day or so, he’ll eat. Continue this for the rest of his life. You can give him a treat once a day once he does start on a regular eating schedule. Be sure and have hard things for him to gnaw on as well once he’s eating regularly.

This will take time to do, but what you can do is start by mixing people food with dog food. Start by more people food then dog food, slowly (every few days) reducing the mix, until he is on mostly dog food.

Another thing is to try heating the dog food in the microwave. Obviously not to the point where its scolding hot, but warm.

Old Roy is the worst brand of food to give your dog. It has little nutritional value and can make his belly upset. Have you tried any dog food with whole meat or veggies in it? I recently changed my dogs (2 minpins) to Halo, after learning that the food I was giving them was under law-suit for falsly claiming to be organic and healthy. My dogs have very sensitive G.I. tracts, and can only tolerate certain things. I mix the canned Halo (human grade whole food, no additives or wheat or fillers) with dry and they eat it right up. Not to mention their BM’s are real good, and their coat got really shinyThey used to be real stubborn about wanting human food, so when I’d feed them, Id walk away and not look back and they realized they didnt have other options. But it was tough. Now I only give them human food once in awhile, and they eat before us so their not so hungry.

    Check out this website

Its where I learned what to look for in dog food. And helped me out alot. You could also make your own food using brown rice, protein (chicken beef, salmon) and green beans. Alot of people have been doing that since all the dog food recalls. I dont blame them. Hope this helps you out some.

so first make sure your getting the right size food for your dog then get any dog food (anything that tastes meaty or something will be good) and start feeding him in your hand.. if he knows any tricks reward him with his food. if he dosent know any tricks train him and do the reward system with treats. eventually he will find that the food is a good thing and once he looks forward to his food put it in his food dish! hope i helped!!!

hhmm…Macdonalds (Ol Roy) or true gourmet? .. which would you choose? Seriously though, spend a little more and buy him a premium food. You might pay a little more, but you will save tons of money on vet bills later on, and have a happier, healthier dog. However if he’s used to eating people food he might not take to the dog food right away. In his mind, why would he eat it when he can get people food from you? The best way to deal with this is to take him off people food cold turkey. In the morning, put down a bowl of dog food, and after 10-15 minutes pick it up whether or not he’s eaten any. Repeat at dinner time. Combine this with absolutely a NO PEOPLE FOOD rule. Nothing. Not one crumb. If you want to give him a treat, offer him dog food. It might take a day or two, but eventually he will be hungry enough to eat his food. He will beg, whine and give you those puppy eyes, but don’t give in! You’re not being mean at all! If you love him you need to do whats best for him. People food, while tasty, does not give dogs the nutrients they need and will shorten his lifespan drastically. Premium dog food has been formulated with everything that he needs will ensure that he lives a long, healthy life.

I have 5 year old Dachshunds. They like Solid Gold Barking at the Moon. I have not found any dogs that don’t like it. It is grain free which is important for Dachshunds. You can use a bit of good canned food if you like. Instinct is good or Natural Balance or Merrick. That other food you are trying to feed is worthless. Check dogfoodanalysis.com for rating and content of foods. That is how I picked Solid Gold. Treat of carrot or orange slice are good. Almost any vegetable.
