Can you give me a suggestion for a good beginner’s cookbook?

I’m looking for simple dishes, the kinds that can be made quickly and easily. Something for a college kid who doesn’t have much time or money and not a lot of access to gourmet food.

The Joy of Cooking is one of the best cookbooks around. However, it’s not always simple. Rachel Ray’s cookbooks contain lots of quick and easy dishes, but they can be expensive. Have you tried searching the web for recipes? I’ve found many cheap, quick and easy recipes that way.

I would honestly go to an online place like:
You can find a huge variety of recipes rated by users (so you know what’s worth making), as well as find a Quick and Easy section for simple meals to prepare.
I have many cook books that gather dust, so save yourself the money and take a peak at allrecipes. I have really found a lot of good recipes on there.

My first cookbook 25 years ago was a Betty Crocker and I still use it. It’s inexpensive and breaks down how to cook anything from boiling an egg to roasting a chicken. It has lots of pictures and shows you how to cook. I learned a lot and my daughter, who is 24, now has one of her own and she loves it.
Check out the source for the books online. Buy the basic cookbook for $12.56. You won’t be disappointed.

I agree with igota.
Betty Crocker is a good beginner’s cookbook because it has most popular American recipes presented in an easy to follow manner with basic ingredients you can find in any supermarket. Also, many recipes are low cost, tasty, and easy to make.
My sons learned how to cook using this cook book. The recipes go from drinks and appetizers to main courses, soups, vegetables, baked goods, and deserts. We have many family favorites we make over and over again such as Brunswick Stew, Yankee Pot Roast, Stir Fry, Chicken Ala King, Apple Crumble Pie, Tuna Casserole, Pepper Steak, and many more.
