How do I keep my Bull Mastiff from eating her kennel and getting out?

happymomma3 asked:

I have a female bull mastiff and I cannot get her kennel fixed to where she will stay in. Any suggestions on how I can keep her from eating on the kennel and getting out? She is a BIG baby but you never know she may bite someone I am just afraid of this happening!
This is an outside dog kennel. made of fencing and the thick metal poles. It is like 6 foot tall.

There is a spray you can buy at the vet and maybe even a local store that keeps them a way from things. I think it would help her to stop eating her cage.

What kind of kennels is it. I would use a mettle bars type. I also find putting clip on the door. The clip you would spin close (Canadian Tire, walmart all have them. I find they keep my crafty Dobermans in.

Sounds like she is bored. Get her some non destructible toys to chew on. She needs to be in a wire pen with a concrete run. She is big enough you should be able to use Cattle panels for fencing. I have used them.

Are you talking about an outside kennel, like a pen? If so, then repair the holes and such and line the bottom of it with chicken wire underneath the dirt (about 6 deep). That’ll keep her from digging. The kennel should be made out of metal, and should have a metal frame. If she still finds a way out, you might consider putting her on a dog run instead. You can get one that provides plenty of running space and gives her freedom to move around. Just make sure that the cables are strong enough to hold her.

Or, are you talking about an inside kennel? If you have the plastic kind, get the metal kind instead.

First, a little known fact; by keeping her in an outdside kennel you are increasing her risk for biting someone. Statisics show a dog is twice more likely to bite a human, if they are left outside. Thought you may appreciate this fact, since you are keeping her caged to prevent such an act.

Boredom is the most common reason why dog’s try to escape. wabbitqueen is right on the money when she reccomnded a Kong. They are self-proclaimed the best toy in the world, and I fully agree with it. (And no I do not work for that company)

Try also exercising her more. Bull Mastiffs, unlike their cousins, need a lot of exercise. Do you have tredmill? Put her on that for 20-30 min a day. Don’t forget long walks also.

Also is she nuetered? If she is not, she may try to escape to mate with someone. If this is the case, no suggestion will help. When there is a will, there is a way. I reccomend having her spayed, sooner than later, if she is not already.

Lastly, if you are doing all these things, and she still is able to escape, you can get a product called Bitter End. You can spray it on the metal, and it will have this really bitter taste dog’s dislike, but again, try the other things first.
