Does eating out cost just about the same as cooking at home?
Dennis R asked:
I always figured that if you take in the consideration the time spent shopping, preparing the food and the overall hassle of grocery shopping it comes up to be just about the same as eating out at restaurants/fast food. Am I wrong and lazy?

If you consider your time that valuable, then yes it could be the same. From a strictly monetary standpoint however eating out is almost ALWAYS much more expensive than preparing the same meal at home.

It all depends on just how valuable YOUR time is. Generally, eating out is a lot more expensive.

This depends highly on how much your time is worth (hourly pay) and if you actually could be working instead of shopping cooking etc. If you only get 8 hours pay a day and you are not shopping, cooking etc. On your free time then that is just lazy.
Also the more you eat at home the more you will save. You. have to eat at least dinner at home at least 5 days a week or more to see a real savings.
I never go out and save at least 50% or more.

Only if all you ever eat at is fast food places. Maybe. I like to eat better than that. I can make an $8 restaurant breakfast at home in 15 minutes for about $3, probably less. It would take me longer than 15 minutes to get to the fast food place, park, and put in my order. I can have a pasta dinner at home, with a glass of wine, for about $7, a dinner that I’d pay $20 for in a restaurant. Takes me about half an hour, start to finish, to get that dinner on the table. I’m having salmon with rice pilaf tonight for dinner. It will cost me about $5. Cooking time about 25 minutes. I could wait that long in a restaurant line-up and waiting for my food to be cooked. I’d pay at least $20 for a salmon dinner in a restaurant. I don’t know how long it takes you to buy groceries, but I can do a week’s worth of shopping in an hour or so.
